A New York State Supreme Court ruling in June 2022 established that public school districts are prohibited from utilizing the nick-names and mascots. In 2001, Commissioner Mills asked Boards of Education to end the use of Native American Mascots as soon as practical. In April 2023, the New York State Department of Education confirmed Sidney CSD must change its nickname/mascot.
